Licensing

Driver Licensing

New residents take both written and driving tests before being licensed to drive on state roads. If you are relocating from another state (domestically) and have a valid driver license from another state, a new residence is required before taking a written test. The drivers test is required of all applicants with licenses from other countries, including Canada. Testing costs $7.00. A five year license costs an additional $25.00. Mass Transit:

Pierce Transit
Fares are $1.00 with discounts for seniors and disabled persons ($.50 if they have a regional reduced fares card from Pierce Transit: $3.00 for seniors and disabled persons). Fares for the Express Routes to Seattle and Olympia range from $1.50 to $2.50. Timetables are available throughout the community, in buses and by calling (253) 581-8000, www.piercetransit.org

Park 'N Ride
Parking lots are strategically placed for bus-riders from outlying districts. Parking is free. http://transit.metrokc.gov

Vanpools
If you drive more than 15 miles to work, a vanpool may be an economical option. Riders pay low monthly fares. Volunteer drivers ride for free. Call 253-581-8000 for more information.

Diamond Lanes
High occupancy vehicles, such as buses, vanpools and carpools, all have access to "diamond lanes" on freeways. These lanes offer priority access to individuals choosing some form of mass transportation.

Washington State Ferries

Sound Transit
Commuter train running from Tacoma Dome Station to Seattle's King St. Station; 28 minutes from Auburn to King Street Station; about 15 minutes from Tukwila to the King Street Station. Sound Transit will eventually run from Lakewood to Everett. www.sounder.org
